Chiropractic Care for my Dog or Cat?

Small animal chiropractic care is becoming established in many veterinary clinics.  Human chiropractic care has been available for over 100 years and research has shown that it is highly effective in treating musculoskeletal conditions.  The principles of chiropractic work equally well for our four-legged friends.

So, how do you know when your animal would be helped by chiropractic care?

There are a number of clues you might notice, although evaluation by a trained professional is the only way to truly know if chiropractic care is indicated for your pet.  The signs of your pet’s needs might be subtle or quite obvious.

Watch your dog turn his or her head while being enticed with a treat.  The head should not tilt as it turns to reach back.  You can look for heat, swelling, tenderness along the spine and along the joints.  Does you pet limp or resist jumping?  Is there muscle imbalance when your dog performs?  Is there shaking of the head, chronic diseases, poor conformation?  Has your agility animal had recent falls or difficulty performing up to their potential?

Many musculoskeletal conditions helped by chiropractic may be symptomatic of a specific veterinary condition as well, which is why the two professions working together provide a broader evaluation of your pets situation.

There are also common conditions of disc problems (in some breeds particularly) and certain types of lameness that need to be evaluated from a chiropractic perspective.  In conjunction with veterinary care, many of these are helped significantly from chiropractic.

Consult with your veterinarian to see if Dr. John Faherty, our AVCA-trained animal chiropractic professional is indicated. Check out his website at www.animalmovement.com.
