Chiropractic Care for My Dog Or Cat?
Human chiropractic care has been available for over 100 years and research has shown that it is highly effective in musculoskeletal conditions. But did you know that the principles of chiropractic work equally well for our four legged friends? Charlotte Street Animal Hospital is proud to partner with Dr. John Faherty in offering small animal chiropractic care.
So, how do you know when your pet would be helped by chiropractic care?
Although evaluation by a trained professional is the only way to truly know if chiropractic care is indicated, there are a number of clues which suggest that your pet will benefit from chiropractic treatment. Watch your dog turn her head as you entice her with a treat. Her head should not tilt as it turns to reach back. Look for heat, swelling, and/or tenderness along the spine and along the 
joints. Does you pet limp or resist jumping? Do you notice muscular imbalance when your dog performs? Is there head shaking, chronic diseases, poor conformation? Has your agility dog recently experienced falls or exhibited difficulty performing up to his potential? Asking these questions can help to assess your pet's needs since the 
signs may be subtle or quite obvious.
Many musculoskeletal conditions helped by chiropractic may signify other specific medical problems as well. Working together with your veterinarian and your chiropractor will ensure a broad evaluation of your pet's condition.
There are common conditions, such as disc problems (in some breeds particularly) and certain types of lameness that need to be evaluated from a chiropractic perspective. In conjunction with veterinary care, many of these conditions are helped significantly from chiropractic. 
Consult with your veterinarian to determine if referral to an AVCA*-trained animal chiropractic professional like Dr. John Faherty is indicated.

From November 15, 2011 to April 15, 2012, Charlotte Street Animal Hospital will be collecting donations for six local animal rescue organizations including Animal Compassion Network, Asheville Humane Society, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, Catman2, Meals on Wheels for Pets, and Phoenix Landing Parrot Rescue.
